LEP skills survey deadline extended

Following an overwhelming response from businesses in the Sheffield City Region, the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) has extended its deadline for businesses to take part in a major research survey to understand the future skills needs of employers to Friday 11 May.

LEP Skills Lead, Helen Rusholme, said, “We have had an incredible response to the skills survey, with over 400 responses taken so far, from a range of businesses across the City Region. “We want to make sure that all businesses get the opportunity to take part in this important survey – so we’ve extended the deadline by an extra week.”

The Sheffield City Region LEP has joined forces with three other Yorkshire LEPs to commission this research. Other LEPs involved in the study are: Leeds City Region; Humber and York; North Yorkshire and East Riding.

The study aims to gain a better understanding of employers’ current and future skills needs and how well the education and training system responds to them.

Nigel Brewster, LEP Board Private Sector Lead for Skills, said:

“Today’s business leaders have an integral part to play in ensuring that we equip young people with the skills and education that City Region businesses need for future growth and economic success.

“This research can contribute towards giving businesses real power and influence over local employment and skills strategies.

“The LEP needs businesses to quantify their skills demand, so we can ensure that all providers offer courses that are well suited to the particular requirements of the Sheffield City Region.”

A large part of the research work involves a survey of businesses from within Sheffield City Region, with a focus on the key growth sectors, to understand their views on: the types of occupations and skills they expect to need over the short and medium term; any training that might be needed to meet these needs; employing young people, graduates and apprentices; current and planned export activity.

The LEP has commissioned research experts from ekosgen and PCP Market Research to carry out the business survey during April. The researchers will be telephoning business leaders across the City Region and asking them to take part in the short survey.

Businesses are also being encouraged to submit their views via an online questionnaire at www.sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/skills

The deadline for responses to the survey is now Friday 11 May 2012.

All information provided by businesses will remain completely confidential under the Market Research Society Code of Conduct. Results will only ever be reported at a group, not an individual level.
