LEP Board unanimously backs HS2

On 11 October 2013, business professionals and political leaders from the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) met to discuss High Speed Rail (HS2) plans for the Sheffield City Region.

The LEP Board has been asked to respond to the current HS2 consultation in general and in particular to consider two station location options for the Sheffield City Region.

The Government is keen to hear the LEP’s views on its proposed routes for Phase 2 of HS2, which will connect London to the West Midlands, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and beyond.

The LEP has been asked to consider two station location options for the Sheffield City Region: one in Sheffield city centre and one interchange station near the Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

Following a well-informed debate, the LEP Board agreed that more information is still needed before a collective decision could be reached on which station location would offer maximum economic impact, subject to affordability. The LEP has agreed to give the City Region’s planners and economists more time to compare the strengths and the weaknesses of the two propositions.

LEP Chairman James Newman said:

“The LEP Board is unanimously in support of the Government’s plans to include a High Speed Rail station in the Sheffield City Region.

“Furthermore, the LEP Board strongly believes that the speedy delivery of Phase 2 of HS2 is fundamental to the future growth of UK Plc. HS2 will accelerate economic growth and create thousands of jobs for City Regions outside of London.

“The LEP Board recognises that HS2 is a once in a century opportunity – which is why we want to give our economic experts the chance to gather and carefully study all the information before we send our response to Government.”
