LEP backs call for acceleration of HS2 project
This week the new chairman of HS2 Ltd, David Higgins, published his review of HS2 project, including his thoughts on the progress made so far, its ongoing development and his plans for the future.
The report, entitled ‘HS2 Plus’, proposes the Government should accelerate Phase Two as soon as possible to deliver the benefits of HS2 – in terms of better services to the North – much sooner.
The Sheffield City Region LEP strongly supports his ambition to speed up the project and welcomes his report.
James Newman, Sheffield City Region LEP Chairman, said:
“The LEP is pleased that Sir David Higgins has joined our calls to accelerate the HS2 project.
“HS2 is a once in a generation opportunity for the Sheffield City Region and all the north, and the business and public sector leaders at the LEP welcomes the HS2 Plus case to accelerate its delivery.
“Speeding up HS2 will have an immediate economic impact – sending a strong signal to businesses looking to make investments in the Sheffield City Region.
“HS2 is a central part of our Strategic Economic Plan, and integrating it with existing and future transport services will be a critical part of ensuring we maximise economic benefits and jobs.
“However, the LEP firmly believes that the Eastern and Western legs of HS2 should be completed in parallel and we will ask the Government to ensure that accelerated delivery does not economically disadvantage areas on either side of the route.”
