LEP responds to Autumn Statement
On 3 December 2014, the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne gave his annual Autumn Statement to Parliament.
In response to the Autumn Statement, James Newman Chairman of the Sheffield City Region LEP said,
“The Sheffield City Region LEP welcomes the Chancellor’s commitment to invest in the north and to devolve more powers and funding to City Regions through local growth deals.
“We believe the Chancellor’s commitment to working with Transport for the North to produce a comprehensive transport strategy is a step in the right direction to better connecting our economies. We urge the Chancellor to accelerate construction of both of the northern legs of HS2 to bring the benefits sooner to the whole of the north – as set out in the One North report earlier this year.
“Earlier this week we welcomed news that the government will invest over £6 billion in the northern road network study and will look at the feasibility of tunnelling under the Woodhead Pass. This is a scheme that, if it goes ahead, will hugely improve connections between Sheffield City Region and Manchester.
“The Chancellor’s announcement that Sheffield City Region will play a major role in a new national advanced material science institute will enable our area to further build on our strength as world leaders in this area.
“As home to one of the most successful UK Enterprise Zones, we also welcome the Chancellor’s commitment to continue to support Enterprise Zones and to consider extensions to zones.”
