New jobs have been created at a bespoke furniture firm, after an expansion project made possible with a grant from the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Sylvan Furniture manufactures all of its designed-to-order products on site in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Four years ago, the small firm won a contract supplying furniture to a large London hotel group and, in 2012, it was asked to develop a range of furniture to sell into the social housing market.

However, these orders, and subsequent demand, meant that the company needed to expand beyond its cramped production space.

Sylvan then applied for a grant of around £25k from the LEP’s Regional Growth Fund, towards a £70k expansion that involved taking on six new members of staff, creating new factory space and making the firm more eco-friendly through the installation of a wood burner.

Commercial director Amanda Page said: “The Local Enterprise Partnership grant enabled us to go ahead with this project, which has now successfully been completed.

“Just under half of the total expenditure was used to create additional space on a mezzanine floor, to replace current office space.

“The successful completion of this expansion project means that we now have the additional capacity, in terms of both equipment and the workforce, to grow the company for the future.”

Sylvan manufactures furniture from client’s specifications and drawings and, if necessary, offers value engineering to meet specific budgets.

Its new-look facility in Pleasley Vale has been designed to meet the demands of modern furniture manufacturing techniques, while retaining key traditional values.

The RGF funding has come from the LEP’s Unlocking Business Investment programme, which has seen £32m in central Government funding allocated to the city region.

Chris Scholey, Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership Board Member, said:

“Our LEP programme is really delivering jobs and boosting local businesses. Our programme has so far helped 130 ambitious local businesses from across the City Region to grow which will create 2,500 new jobs.

“Government clearly recognise the effectiveness of our local programme which is why we secured a top-up of £52 million as part of our Growth Deal. This will help us to further boost business growth and create a further 3,000 jobs in our City Region.”

Last year, it was announced that the Sheffield City Region had secured a £320m Growth Deal from the Government, which will create more than 28,000 jobs and training for 40,000 people.

This was the fifth-largest sum to be secured of the 39 LEPs within the country. As part of the Sheffield City Region Growth Deal, the LEP secured a further funding from Government which will be used to support businesses to invest and grow.
