Strong local college partnership will bring transformational change
This week, Government has published the first wave of reports on Area Based Reviews into post-16 education which includes a report for Sheffield City Region.
Since concluding its Area Based Review in June 2016, Sheffield City Region has made significant progress against the recommendations in its report which are aimed at ensuring that the region has a more financially resilient Further Education sector that is responsive to resident and business needs.
Nigel Brewster, Vice Chair of the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), chaired the City Region’s Area Based Review. He said: “Local partners in Sheffield City Region are working together to drive forward the transformational changes set out in our Area Based Review. The hard work begins now as partners jointly work through due diligence on the recommendations to ensure that our Further Education sector can deliver the best outcomes for residents, businesses and ultimately the economic growth that our City Region is striving to achieve.”
Due Diligence on the proposed merger between RNN and Dearne Valley has already been completed with a proposed merger date (following local consultation) of the 1st Feb 2017.
After further consideration, Doncaster College’s Board of Governors decided not to pursue the merger with Barnsley College. However both partners are committed to working in partnership with Sheffield City Region to pursue alternative options for collaboration that will benefit learners and businesses.
Significant progress has been made against the other recommendations including a successful application to the Transition fund to support the development of a region wide Apprenticeship company, exploratory work for both Sixth Forms around the Academy option and plans for a Curriculum Review which in the first instance will focus on STEM activity. Chesterfield College is continuing to progress work with Derby College on a Joint Venture in order to create efficiencies and stimulate growth.
