Sheffield City Region takes success to Paris Air Show

Members of the SCR’s Trade and Investment Team are at the world’s largest and most prestigious air show, talking about the huge successes of the Sheffield City Region.

With 2,300 international exhibitors, 150,000 trade visitors, 30 national pavilions and almost 300 official delegations, the Paris Air Show is a key opportunity to promote the SCR’s strengths. Extra show tickets were released when they originally sold out last October, such is its stature as a ‘must-attend’ event for all professionals working in the aeronautics and space sectors.

The air show allows the SCR team to meet all the key players, seize fresh commercial opportunities, present our expertise and innovation to the world, and form technological and industrial partnerships.

Gareth Morgan and Tony Corby are at the Paris Air Show which runs until the weekend, equipped with three rather large feathers in their caps, all related to the advanced manufacturing for which this region is justifiably famous.

Boeing is investing in research and production of wing components here; supercar maker McLaren is investing in research and production of its chassis here; and the SCR has funded the revolutionary new Composites Technology Centre which investigates light-weight materials for both the aeronautical and automotive industries. Our partners deal with some of the largest companies in the global aerospace industry.

The McLaren and Boeing investments will bring hundreds of high-value jobs and millions of pounds of investment into the region, reshoring production to UK plc. They will be the anchors for the UK’s first Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District which encompasses the centres of excellence at our heart.

All three investments build on our proud heritage of engineering expertise, and the innovation, energy and enthusiastic partnership of the many teams who worked so hard to make them happen.

And the message from the Trade and Investment team will be just that: we work in partnership and we have the expertise to make things happen. The ‘let’s get it done’ work-ethic in Sheffield City Region harnesses drive and ambition.

It’s a pretty fine offer – and the team will be making sure the delegates at the air show don’t overlook it. They’ll have long days of determined talks with target contacts and look to build up the relationships and partnerships which are key to attracting investment.

We are anticipating two more announcements of major investments by world-class companies in the advanced manufacturing world later this year and early next year, while talks are already underway with supply chain businesses. Success breeds success.

Rachel Clark, director of trade and investment for the SCR, said: “This region has an enviable track record in attracting investors. We’re celebrating our best ever year for investment by foreign-owned companies, with partnership between all our nine local authorities bringing a massive £1.9billion into the region, and more than 7,000 jobs created or safeguarded.

“Going to the air show – and our involvement with others such as the Innotrans rail exhibition and the flagship Huston Offshore Technologies conference – is fundamental to competing successfully on the world stage as we do.

“We aren’t just competing with other UK regions, we’re happy to be up against the likes of New York and Tokyo.”
