Following ONS data today (Friday 19 February) that shows redundancy rates are increasing faster than in the 2008 economic crash, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region Dan Jarvis has called on the Government to back an ambitious plan to unlock thousands of jobs in the region.

He has called on Ministers to use the Budget on March 3 to back local leader’s plans to kick-start South Yorkshire’s recovery from COVID – delivering investment in jobs, skills and infrastructure to protect and create jobs and we rebuild and renew in the aftermath of the COVID pandemic.

Commenting, Mayor Dan Jarvis said:

“COVID is devastating regions like South Yorkshire and causing unemployment to surge to levels not seen since the late 1990s, when our region was reeling from the closure of the pits. The brutal reality is that a toxic combination of COVID and austerity has served to level down our communities.

“It’s time to stop tinkering and start transforming. Local leaders and I have developed the blueprints  to protect and create thousands of jobs and drive our economic renewal.

“However, we cannot do this alone. We need the Government to support our ambitious renewal plans.  That’s why I’m calling on Rishi Sunak to use next month’s Budget to deliver the investment South Yorkshire and the wider North needs – before it’s too late.”
