Responding to the Prime Minister’s speech today, Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “While the Prime Minister talked up a ‘New Deal’, it felt like much more of the same: appealing language, but little substance to match the rhetoric. We need practical action and a delivery plan that will radically transform our economy and society after the coronavirus pandemic.

“Last week, I wrote to the Chancellor calling for a New Deal for the North, to create a stronger, fairer, greener economy for South Yorkshire and the North. To deliver this, we need ambitious new investment, new powers and new ideas so we can build back better.

“I support the investment in infrastructure, transport and the ‘opportunity guarantee’ for young people. But we need Government to work with devolved leaders to support our economic renewal and match our ambitions to unlock prosperity and opportunity, not just return to a broken status quo.

“In South Yorkshire, the first phase of our renewal plan alone needs huge investment that will help support tens of thousands of jobs and businesses and revitalise our region’s infrastructure and town centres. That will put us on the road to not just economic recovery, but renewal.”
