Creating an advanced, connected and confident economy that’s central to the Northern Powerhouse agenda.

That’s the challenge that’s been set to the forthcoming Mayor of Sheffield City Region (SCR), in a business manifesto published by the SCR Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) today.

The manifesto, prepared by private sector members of the LEP board, lays out five separate challenges and six business-focused priorities for the new Mayor, who will be elected in May.

At the heart of those priorities is the advancement of SCR as a great place to live, with a reputation for being practical, straightforward and enterprising.

Sir Nigel Knowles, chairman of the SCR LEP, said: “The business community of our city region has always stood shoulder to shoulder with our elected leaders, in a collective mission to grow our economy. We stand by again to put our collective shoulder to the wheel.

“As a powerful individual in their own right, working alongside fellow Metro Mayors and operating in a strong formal partnership with the council leaders of the Sheffield City Region, our new Mayor can be the defining force of our economy.

“We therefore call on the SCR Mayor, whoever he or she may be, to share our vision for raising ambition, building businesses and growing our economy, together making Sheffield City Region the very best it can be – both now and into the future.”

The five challenges posed to the Mayor are for the SCR to be central to the Northern Powerhouse agenda; to lift the ambitions of young people; to continue the resurgence of urban centres; to build transport systems enabling residents to live, work and play across the SCR’s towns and cities and to build stronger and more resilient businesses.

Meanwhile, the manifesto also sets out six business-focused priorities for the Mayor.

These are to grow the number of global advanced manufacturers and their supply chains in SCR; to create a connected economy where residents can access all parts of the city region easily and affordably; to create a confident economy with a strong voice on the Northern Powerhouse and national stage; for the Mayor to tell the SCR story around the world by seeking new trade and investment partners; to foster an educated economy where creativity, entrepreneurialism and problem solving sits alongside academic and vocational excellence; and to secure further powers and resources from national government to unlock economic growth.

Sir Nigel added: “Our LEP is a trusted delivery partner, as evidenced through successive Growth Deals and the steady transfer of powers and resources to local decision-makers.

“Our £350m programme of investment is already unlocking growth across the city region; our Enterprise Zones are home to new investors such as McLaren Automotive and Boeing Sheffield; and our Growth Hub is recognised as being in the top three nationally.

“We’re now looking forward to working with our Mayor, after they are elected on Friday 4 May, to further build on these successes.”
