Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis MP has visited The Sheffield College to hear about the contribution of the further education sector to the regional economy.

During his visit on February 4th, Mr Jarvis met senior leaders at the College’s City campus on Granville Road. He also toured part of the campus including the aviation, catering and hospitality, and media make-up curriculum areas.

Mayor Jarvis said: “Access to outstanding education is crucial in ensuring everyone, from all backgrounds and all of the Sheffield City Region’s diverse communities, can realise their ambitions.

“It was inspiring to see the range of apprenticeship opportunities on offer at The Sheffield College, and learn more about the College’s dedication to training the workforce of the future in the skills young people need to realise their potential.”

The meeting explored technical education and the increasing demand for apprenticeships, with the College being the largest provider in the city and region.

Discussions also focused on the College’s significant role delivering the skills that employers need for growth – and which reflect Sheffield City Region priorities.

The national Love Our Colleges campaign that has galvanised support from college leaders, students, trade unions and MPs, to lobby for fairer funding for the further education sector, was another topic for discussion.

Angela Foulkes, Chief Executive and Principal, The Sheffield College, said: “It was great to meet Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis MP and raise awareness of the College as an anchor institution given its significant regional contribution to students, communities and employers.”

Seb Schmoller, Chair of Governors, The Sheffield College, added: “I was impressed with Dan’s grasp of the crucial role of further education in Sheffield City Region, and with his determination as Mayor to work with us and neighbouring FE colleges to ensure a long term plan for the future that meets the needs of our citizens.”
